... 1901, the Ligue des Droits de l'Homme, or Human Rights League, was founded in Belgium. It followed by 3 years the establishment of a similar league in France. According to its website, the Ligue (logo at left) "continues its daily efforts to keep watch over the protection of fundamental rights in Belgium's French community."
... 1973 (35 years ago today), "[a]fter 70 days, two deaths, numerous injuries, countless meetings, bureaucratic bickering and a last-minute gunfight, more than 100 militants lay down their arms and surrendered this occupied reservation town to wary Federal officials" at Wounded Knee, South Dakota. Thus ended a siege by Native Americans at the town on the Pine Ridge Reservation where the U.S. Army had massacred Sioux in 1890. Serving as a medic during the 1973 occupation was Madonna Thunder Hawk (right), who described her experience here.
