... 1793 (215 years ago today), the province of Upper Canada, now the southern part of Ontario (in orange at left), passed the Act Against Slavery, subtitled An Act to prevent the further introduction of SLAVES, and to limit the Term of Contracts for SERVITUDE within this Province." It was in force until 1833, when Britain's Parliament, by means of the Slavery Abolition Act, abolished slavery throughout the empire.
... 1991, at a meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, the International Olympic Committee decided to permit South Africa to compete in the 1992 Olympic Games, dependent "on further progress toward the unification of South Africa's racially disparate sports bodies." The country had not competed since 1960, due to the banishment by the IOC (flag at right) and to boycott threats.
