... 1823 (185 years ago today), Chile abolished the slave trade. Abolition was a legislative act of the Republic of Chile, which had been established after the South American country won independence from Spain in 1818. ... 1923 (85 years ago today), in Switzerland, Britain, France, Greece, Italy, Japan, Romania, Turkey, the United States, and Yugoslavia signed the post-World War I Treaty of Lausanne, which established a Republic of Turkey in part of what had been the Ottoman Empire, and further provided for protection of the Greek ethnic minority within those borders.
