...1943, Nazi troops suppressed a nearly month-long uprising by Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto. Approximately a half-million women, children, and men had been kept for 3 years in a part of the city smaller than 1 square mile. The uprising had begun when Nazis attempted to deport some residents to concentration camps. An estimated 40,000 Jews were killed in reprisal for th uprising.
